Training objectives
- This course aims to provide the students information about different methods of physical Anthropology applied on human remains and about their importance for reconstructing the human past, as well as to clarify cases of Forensic Anthropology. In particular, we will focus on some aspects of paleopathology and molecular paleopathology. We will always pay attention to the biological differences between the two sexes, as these can also have an influence on the study of the human past.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of anatomy and possibly genetics.
Course programme
- The program includes the determination from the skeleton of individual sex and age, physical characteristics, pathologies. We will then consider the information that can be derived from ancient DNA, especially those of biomedical interest. We will focus in particular on the case of the plague, as the latest interdisciplinary studies lead to reconsider concepts proposed in the past, especially with regard to the mechanisms of transmission.
