Training objectives
- From the knowledge of the respiratory physiology to the understanding of all available methods to assess respiratory function. At the end of the course the students will be able to use the different techniques, to understand the normality/abnormality of the results. During the practical they will undergo all the test learning the correct procedures.
Prerequisites
- Knowledge og human physiology, especially respiratory physiology. Basic knowledge of biochemistry and physics
Course programme
- Principles of respiratory physiology. Pulmonary flows and volumes. Slow and forced spirometry. Measurement of residual volume, total lung capacity, alveolar-capillary diffusion. Airway resitance. Compliance. Respiratory muscle assessment. Cardiorespiratory exercise test, 6minute walking test. Peripheral oxygenation. Non invasive assessment of pulmonary inflammation. Non invasive cardiorespiratory monitoring.

Learning assessment procedures
- The exam consists of an online questionnaire. The questionnaire includes both multiple choice questions (only one correct answer) and the interpretation of pulmonary function tests. 11 questions will be submitted to the students. If the answers given are all correct, the mark will be 30 cum laude; if 10 correct 30; if 9 correct 28, if 8 correct 26; if 7 correct 24; if 6 correct 22, if 5 correct 20.
