Training objectives
- Recognition of genes involved in cancer. Understanding the mechanisms underlying the hereditary transmission of neoplastic diseases. Understand the differences between hereditary and sporadic cases. Knowledge of the different hereditary syndromes. Understand the benefits and limitations of genetic testing for cancer-causing hereditary syndromes. Know the diagnostic and genetic "counseling" approaches for the management of predisposed patients and families.
Prerequisites
- Frequency of courses: General Genetics and General Pathology
Course programme
- Introduction: cancer heritability mechanisms. Penetrance and expressivity concepts. Genes implicated in tumorigenesis. Methods of analysis of the genes involved. Genetic counseling for patients and families. Description of the different forms of hereditary neoplastic syndromes that predispose to the onset of neoplasms in humans, with particular reference to molecular bases. Diagnostic and counseling approaches for patients and families. Chemoprophylaxis and prevention for hereditary breast / ovarian and gastrointestinal tract syndromes.
