Training objectives

The course is organized in collaboration with the University of Maastricht (NL) in order to provide adequate training to recognize, understand and deal with the problems of postmenopausal women with a multidisciplinary approach and in accordance with international guidelines of scientific reference societies on menopause. The student will acquire the clinical not specialist knowledge, to acknowledge the physiology of menopause, the main clinical and metabolic changes related to estrogen deprivation and cancer risk. The student will learn the preventive ways to promote and maintain the health of this female population in climacteric.

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English language. After passing the exams of: Anatomy I, Human Anatomy II and Clinical Propaedeutics, Physiology I, Physiology II, Pathology I and Immunology, Pathology II and Physiopathology.
Note:
Participation in the course is limited to a maximum of 10 students at the University of Ferrara. If the number of requests is higher, the graded list will be defined based on the weighted average of the exams Anatomy I, Human Anatomy II and Clinical Propaedeutics, Physiology I, Physiology II, Pathology I and Immunology, Pathology II and Physiopathology, calculated on 30/9.
Exam’s marks must already be verbalized in the student's online booklet: the lack of one or more votes is reason for exclusion. In case of even votes, will have precedence the student with the highest number of verbalized CFU in the online booklet in the date of 30/9.

Time-table of the endocrinology of the menopause
Healthcare aspects of menopause:
Subjective symptoms, including psychological problems social and sexual aspects of menopause.
Cognitive disease
Vulvar and Vaginal Health
STIs and Elder Sexuality
Health-risks in menopause (cardiovascular didease, osteoporosis; malignancies)
Oxidative stress and menopause
Treatment options: prescritptive and complementary alternative treatment for menopausal complaints
Contraceptive needs of older reproductive-aged women
Pregnancy in advanced fertile age.
Diagnostic tools: symptom scales, algorithms for the assessment of cardio-vascular and fracture risk. Laboratory exams,radiological investigation,bone densitometry. Methods for the evaluation of body composition.

Didactic methods

Three lectures by basic and clinical specialists per week. Practicals in the field of climacteric medicine Two case/problem-based tutorials per week.

Learning assessment procedures

The exam will consist of a written multiple-choice test (40 questions; 1 of 4 alternatives right) lasting 2 hours and a power-point presentation together with one other student on a special topic related to the main subject 'Menopause'. Will be assessed: scientific content, ability to interdisciplinary connections and quality of exposure.
0.75 points are awarded for each correct answer. The written exam is passed with 24 correct answers
The final result is calculated by the sum of both components (50% + 50%).
Given the particular teaching method with which they are required courses (PBL) and the organization of the final exam, the exam must be done at the end of each cycle of lessons and not in years other than the frequency.
