Training objectives

The course aims to propose an interdisciplinary humanistic/biomedical approach to how sex and gender determinants influence health and illness; to analyse what gender bias and gender stereotypes consist of and how they manifest themselves, and how this knowledge can be grafted onto medical research and clinical practice

Prerequisites

Knowledge of English is desirable

Course programme

A humanistic integration to biomedical practice is offered, for the deepening of knowledge on sex and gender characteristics, sexual and gender identity, sexual orientation, sex and gender roles; contrasting discrimination and inequalities related to patriarchy machismo, the sex/gender system of societies; some insights on gender in the family and work environment for the knowledge of the everyday life of patients. It will delve into how sexual and gender differences are dealt with in health/illness, exploring the potential of the 'sex and gender based' approach, 'gender medicine', and in this, among others, the phenomenon of gender-based violence, considering its nature as 'avoidable behaviour'. The legislative aspects that characterise our country as the only one in Europe with a law on gender medicine will also be explored.
