Training objectives

GENERAL SURGERY
Medical history, etiology, diagnosis and therapy of the thoracic diseases
SKIN AND VENEREAL DISEASES
Acquisition of basic knowledge about dermatological diseases more frequently observed during clinical practice 1) viral, bacterial and mycotic 2) inflammatory and immune-mediated diseases 3) precancerous and cancerous diseases 4) contact allergic and irritant dermatitis
Knowledge of cutaneous drug reactions.
Clinical and microbiological recognition of main sexually transmitted diseases.
Dermatological basic therapy. Knowledge of incoming physiopathology variations and of the Italian and international guidelines that influence the management of the dermatosis.
Care to sex/genus medicine: knowledge of potential risk of infectious diseases and sexually transmitted diseases on foetus and of teratogenicity caused by drugs usually used in practical dermatology
PLASTIC SURGERY
The purpose of this course is to present in a simple and schematic manner a panoramic of the main features of the discipline, focusing attention on the surgical approach of some example cases.
At the end of the course the student will be able to recognize and face different pathological cases, using the theoretical and practical knowledge acquired during the lessons.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology, microbiology, general pathology, pharmacology, immunology. Passing exams of: Clinical methodology II and Diagnostic Imaging and Radiation Protection

Course programme

GENERAL SURGERY
Etiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of functional and organic diseases of the lung, esophagus, and pleura.
SKIN AND VENEREAL DISEASES
Anatomy and physiology of the skin, subcutis and adnexa. Cutaneous diseases caused by viruses (HSV,VZV, HPV, POX), bacteria (superficial and deep pyodermitis), mycetes (dermatophytosis, candidiasis, pityriasis versicolor), arthropods (insect bites, scabies, lices).
Irritant and allergic contact dermatitis. Ipodermitis. Drug reactions, erythema polymorphous, S Steven Johnson, S Lyell. Urticaria. Immunobullous diseases. Inflammatory diseases. Epidermal skin tumours. Nevi and melanoma. Cutaneous lymphomas. Sexually transmitted diseases. Burns.
PLASTIC SURGERY
Principles of surgical techniques in Plastic Surgery. Congenital malformations: general concepts. Vascular and lymphatic malformations. Cutaneous tumours. Radiation and decubitus lesions. Post-mastectomy breast reconstruction. Skin expansion and clinical applications. Burn diseases and elements of microsurgery. Notions of Aesthetic Surgery.

Didactic methods

GENERAL SURGERY
Frontal lessons
SKIN AND VENEREAL DISEASES
Frontal lessons and comment of slides of dermatological lesions all together.
Practical training with small groups of students. Training in Day Service, surgical theatre, general, mycological, allergological and videodermatoscopical clinic. Practical knowledge of the diagnostic tools usually used in everyday practice
PLASTIC SURGERY
Theoretical lessons and practical part, that is done dividing the students in small groups, in order to allow them to attend our department, the operating rooms and the clinics.

Learning assessment procedures

GENERAL SURGERY
Oral examination, about a total of 3 questions regarding general Thoracic surgery, plastic surgery and skin and Venereal diseases. The exam lasts for about 20-30 minutes. The clearness and soundness of the contents, the ability to establish connections about the notions acquired, and the appropriateness of communication will be all evaluated.
SKIN AND VENEREAL DISEASES
Oral exam: the duration of the exam is approximately 20 minutes for an average of five questions. It will be assessed knowledge of the students about to the subject studied, the logic capability in communication and finally the capability to prescribe laboratory tests and the correct therapy.
PLASTIC SURGERY
Oral exam: 3 questions will be made in order to evaluate the capability in communication. The duration of the exam will be approximately 15 minutes for each student:
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TEST.
