Training objectives

GENERAL SURGERY and ANESTHESIA
To evaluate in a clinical setting, under the supervision of a tutor, the theoretical knowledge acquired during the first semester.
PAIN THERAPY
Promote the most correct approach to the management of the pain problem by implementing appropriate behaviors towards the patient so as to arrive at the most effective treatment, with a view to a multidisciplinary assessment by developing the topics concerning the main causes, pathophysiology, diagnosis and therapies Currently in use. Particular attention will be paid to the pharmacological aspect, the interaction between drugs, to proceed to a personalization and humanization of an analgesic therapy also in light of the present comorbidities.

Prerequisites

Good knowledge of the surgical anatomy, pathophysiology, pathology.
Knowledge of the pathophysiology of the most relevant diseases and syndromes associated with a compromised vital sings.

Course programme

GENERAL SURGERY and ANESTHESIOLOGY
Clinical practice, under supervision of a tutor, regarding the theoretical knowledge acquired during the first semester at the U.O.C. Surgery II
PAIN THERAPY
Anatomy and Physiology of Pain
Morpho-functional organization of the nervous system. Conduction of the nociceptive stimulus. The receptors The neurons of 1st 2nd 3rd and 4th order. Control of pain afference
Physiopathological and clinical evaluation of acute, persistent, chronic, psychogenic, neuropathic pain
Treatment principles in chronic "benign" pain and cancer pain
Drugs in Pain Therapy
Techniques of Invasive Analgesia: main indications of analgesic blocks, intrathecal morphine, electrical stimulation analgesia.
Seminar activities
A seminar conducted by the Head of the "Hospital without pain" University Hospital S. Anna of Ferrara
Pain therapy in Italy
Presentation of the main guidelines for chronic and acute pain
Practical activities
Practical activities at the operating units of the University-University and Territorial Hospital of Ferrara

Didactic methods

Discussion of clinical cases. Attendance in the wards and services of the University-University and Territorial Hospital of Ferrara
Attendance of the Pain Therapy Seminar

Learning assessment procedures

An attendance logbook will be filled with the trainee's judgment to allow the formulation of the final assessment of suitability.
The final vote will be acquired at the end of the second semester and will be the result of the evaluation of the partial tests, of the judgment
of the Pain Therapy Seminar and of the training internship.
