Training objectives
- To acquire the knowledge of nervous cell, muscle, cardiovascular, respiratory, gastro-intestinal, kidney, endocrine physiology required to achieve the aims of the degree.

Course programme
- Neurophysiology. The neuron: Ionic equilibrium and resting membrane potentials. Generation and conduction of action potentials. Synaptic transmission. Muscle: Contraction of muscle cells. Muscle mechanics. The nervous system. General principles of sensory system. The somato-sensory system: touch, proprioception and pain. Chemical senses: taste. Motor control. Spinal organization of reflexes. Cortical control of movement. Voluntary movement. Oral physiology. Tooth and periodontal tissue. Trigeminal organization and functions. Mastication. Salivation. Swallowing. Cardiovascular physiology. The circuitry. Electrical activity of the heart. The cardiac pump. Regulation of the heartbeat and cardiac stroke volume. Hemodynamic. The arterial system. The microcirculation and lymphatics. The peripheral circulation and its control. Control of cardiac output: coupling of heart and blood vessels. Special circulations. Interplay of central and peripheral factors in the control of circulation. Respiratory physiology. Organization and mechanics of the respiratory system. The pulmonary circulation. Gas diffusion. Ventilation perfusion relationship. Gas exchange and gas transport. Control of respiration. Respiratory physiology in unusual environments. Renal physiology: glomerular and tubular functions and their control.
