Training objectives

The objectives of this teaching block are:
-to provide theoretical basic knowledge concerning anatomy and the physiopathology of the complex pulpo dentinal
-the etiopathogenesis of diseases of the pulp and inflammatory lesions peri-radicular of endodontic origin
-elements useful for the differential diagnosis of the lesions endo-periodontal and cause of pain not odontogeno district gold-face
-the theoretical bases of classification clinical patient suffering from pulp pathology by proper medical history, clinical examination and its diagnosis and treatment plan
-the characteristics of the materials and of the instrumentation used in endodontics
-techniques for the opening of the pulp chamber, access to endodonto, instrumentation, disinfection and blocking of the root canals, in respect of the periodontal tissues and of the adjacent structures.
The student after lessons will have to demonstrate knowledge and ability to understanding considering specific topics and comprehension skills regarding:
-the criteria classificativi and nomenclature of the lesions pulpari and peri-radicular
-the etiopathogenesis of pulp pathology and peri-canal, the formulation of a correct diagnosis, prognostic evaluations in endodontics
- basic principles of instrumentation, disinfection and blocking of the system of root canals

Prerequisites

Students should have adequate knowledge on oral anatomy and histology, oral microbiology and immunology, oral pathology

Course programme

Anatomy and histology of teeth dental tissues, endodontic system. Physiology of endodontic system
Etiopathogenesis of pulp damage. Complications of dental caries. Iatrogenic damage to the pulp. The pulp, root canal and periapical pathology.
Classification of pulp Diseases, clinical and histological.
Clincal and instrumental diagnostic pathway in endodontics.
(clincal exam, pulp tests, WX-ray). The interpretation of radiographs in endodontics.
Anesthesia in endodontics. The acute pain management in endodontics:
Rubber dam in endodontics.
Access to the pulp chamber: incisor, canine, premolar, molars.
Root canal system shaping: H. Schilder mechanical principles. The endodontic instruments. The ISO standards. The standardization Profile. The various types of manual instruments.
The Ni-Ti alloy.
Ni-Ti manual instruments to increase conicity: characteristics and operating techniques.
Endodontics shaping: manual instrumentation.

Didactic methods

Lectures; practical sessions under tutor supervision; preclinical and clinical sessions.
“Problem-Based- Learning” (PBL) system will be applied during the clinical and hands on training.

Learning assessment procedures

At the end of the semester will be carried out an oral examination.
