Training objectives
- Basic principles concerning the anatomy, physiology and histology of the periodontal structures; dental plaque and calculus; periodontal pathogens; pathogenesis of periodontal diseases; risk factors.
Prerequisites
- Students should have adequate knowledge on oral anatomy and histology, oral microbiology and immunology, oral pathology
Course programme
- Anatomy of the Periodontium: gingiva, periodontal ligament, root cementum, alveolar bone. Epidemiology of Periodontal Diseases. Dental Biofilms and Microbiology of the Periodontal Disease: etiological agents, mechanisms of pathogenicity. Pathogenetic Aspects of Gingivitis and Periodontitis: gingival inflammation, progression to destructive lesions, host defense processes. Innate and acquired risk factors, host susceptibility. Non-plaque associated periodontal diseases.
