Training objectives
- To acquire basic principles on periodontal surgical procedures, including gingival surgery, osseous resective and reconstructive surgery and soft tissue reconstructive procedures.
Prerequisites
- Basic principles concerning: anatomy, histology and microbiology of the periodontium; etiologic and pathogenetic aspects of periodontal diseases. Basic knowledge on different forms of periodontal diseases, as well as the main clinical and radiographic parameters to assess the periodontal status of the patient. Basic principles and advanced concepts of non-surgical periodontal instrumentation.
Course programme
- Plastic (soft tissue) reconstructive surgery:- mucogingival deformities: classification- free gingival graft- Subpedicle connective tissue graft - pedicle flaps
Guided tissue regeneration(GTR):- biologic principles, indications and contraindications- resorbable and non-resorbable membranes- clinical outcome and predictors
Treatment of furcation defects:- root anatomy- classification and diagnosis- therapy: scaling & root planing, odontoplasty, tunnelling, root resection and separation, GTR- prognostic factors
Sutures: materials and technique
Surgical dressing
Anti-microbial and anti-inflammatory postsurgery protocol
Supportive periodontal therapy
Extra- and intra-coronal splinting
Perio-ortho relationships
Prosthetic principle in periodontal patients.
CLINICAL TRAINING:
periodontal charting- use of periapical radiographs - non-surgical periodontal instrumentation - periodontal re-evaluation Didactic methods
- Lectures and workshops. Problem-based learning & case-based learning. Simulation laboratory and Clinical hands-on training
Learning assessment procedures
- The evaluation of the student is based on multiple choice questionnaire, consisting of 266 questions. The student has 2 hours to complete the test on Moodle platform, The final score results from the proportion of corrected answers as expressed in 30s. Score is 1 for the exact question, 0 for error.
