Training objectives
- The purpose of the course is to permit the diagnostic recognition of the more common pathologies of the oral cavity. A clinical systematic method to reduce the diagnostic margin of mistake is emphasized. The responsabilities of the future dentist in connection with the consequences of a wrong diagnosis, or a wrong therapy or a therapeutic delay with the consequent damages, are stressed during the course.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, general pathology, histology and radiology. Knowledge of embriology of stomatognatic apparatus.
Course programme
- History of oral pathology, evolution till the modern oral medicine. The diagnostic method in oral medicine, the diagnostic protocol, till the definitive diagnosis by the instrumental examinations, including biopsy.
Teeth and of mouth anomalies.
More common oral mucosa pathologies. Salivary glandes pathologies.
Benign tumors of oral cavity hard and soft tissues.
Odontogenic tumors. Potentially malign disorders and malign tumors.
Stomatitis.
Relationships among oral pathologies and systemic illnesses. Didactic methods
- Lectures and case-based learning on the patient during the clinical activity.
Learning assessment procedures
- At the end of the semester there will be an oral test to verify the knowledge gained by the student in relation to the etiology, pathogenesis , clinical manifestations and symptoms of oral diseases.
Usually, the exams consist of questions about three discussion topics. Exam duration: 40-60 minutes. Reference texts
