Training objectives
- DERMATOLOGY
Knowledge of diseases that involve primarely or secondarely the oral cavity. Recognition of ulcerative, preneoplastic and neoplastic diseases of lips and oral mucosae. Knowledge of basic treatment for oral diseases.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Systematic knowledge of the more important Infectious and Tropical Diseases sustained by bacteria, virus, parasites and fungi, under the aetiology, pathogenesis, clinical and diagnostic aspect. Basic knowledge of the chemoprophylaxis. Antibiotic therapy (most important molecules) of the major Infectious and Tropical diseases and concepts of Antimicrobial Stewardship.
REUMATOLOGY
Knowledge of the classification of rheumatic diseases and knowledge of the clinical pictures of the main rheumatic diseases (both inflammatory and degenerative) with particular reference to those rheumatic diseases which can manifest with involvement of the oral cavity.
The student should be able to autonomously recognize the clinical pictures of the main rheumatic disease and should be advised for a prompt referral to the rheumatology specialist of those conditions which need further diagnostic and therapeutic approach. Appropriate communications skills with the patients are also required. Prerequisites
- DERMATOLOGY
Anatomy and physiology of the mouth. Basic knowledge of microbiology and general pathology.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Basic knowledge of anatomy, biochemistry, physiology, Pathology and microbiology and pharmacology and clinic (general concepts)
REUMATOLOGY
Good knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the musculo-skeletal apparatus and joints.
Basic knowledge of biology, molecular biology, genetics, cell physiology and immunology with particular reference to the immune-mediated inflammatory processes and autoimmunity.
Principles of pharmacology and knowledge of general clinical semeiology. Course programme
- DERMATOLOGY
Viral and bacterial diseases. Bollous diseases. Lichen planus. Cheilitis and macrocheilitis. Precancerosis and carcinoma. Irritant and allergic stomatitis and cheilitis. Urticaria. Drug adverse reactions. Sexually transmitted diseases.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Mechanisms of defence against the Infectious Diseases (natural and acquired immunity) and transmission of Infectious and Tropical Diseases. Knowledge of the major Infectious and Tropical Diseases according to the epidemiology, etiology and clinical picture.
In particular, the student must know: sepsis and septic shock, infectious endocarditis, respiratory infections (bronchopneumonia and pneumonia) including tuberculosis, foodborne infections, infectious diarrhea (infective gastroenteritis), acute and chronic viral hepatitis, meningitis, and encephalomyelitis, urinary and biliary tract infections, osteomyelitis and spondylodiscitis, soft skin and tissue infections (SSTi), infections associated with pregnancy, sexual transmitted diseases. HIV/AIDS and opportunistic infections AIDS-related (respiratory, gastrointestinal, brain, eye, etc.). Health care associated infections. Main human zoonoses (Lyme disease, leptospirosis, brucellosis, bartonellosis, rickettsiosis), Mycoplasma and Chlamydia infections; herpesvirus infections (Citomegalovirus, Epstein Barr virus, varicella-zoster) and enterovirus (ECHO and Coxsackie) infections. Knowledge of main parasites of human interest (Malaria, Leishmaniasis, Hydatidosis, Toxoplasmosis, Amebiasis) and fungal infections.

Classification and epidemiology of the rheumatic diseases. (1 hour)
Semeiology of joint pain. (1 hour)
Interpretation of lab investigations. (1 hour)
Main imaging techniques (ultrasound, MRI, conventional x-ray, computed tomography and nuclear medicine techniques). (1 hour)
Early diagnosis of rheumatic disease. Red flags. (1 hour)
Chronic inflammatory rheumatic diseases (rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondyloartrhitis) and crystal induced arthritis (2 hours)
Crystal induced arthritis (1 hour)
connective tissue diseases and vasculitis (general approach) (1 hour)
Sjogren’s syndrome (1 hour)
Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis (1 hour)

Oral mucositis and rheumatic diseases (1 hour)
Fibromyalgia and temporal-mandibular joint syndrome (2 hours) Didactic methods
- DERMATOLOGY
Formal teaching, presentation of clinical slides with interactive discussion and diagnostic hypotesis.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Lectures. In order to deepen their knowledge, the students may also follow conferences and seminars of Infectious and Tropical Diseases organized by the Section of Infectious and Tropical Diseases (Department of Medical Sciences) which take place throughout the year. There are not practical clinic exercices. Learning assessment procedures
- DERMATOLOGY
Oral exam. 2-4 questions will be offered to the student. Slides of oral pathology will be discussed to test the observational and deductive capability of the student. Clarity of presentation and hypotesis of differential diagnosis will be requested during of oral exam. The duration of the exam is approximately 20 minutes. Weighted avarege will be used for the final vote.
INFECTIOUS DISEASES
The student must know the arguments regarding the program of Infectious and Tropical Diseases that the teacher carries during the cycles of lessons, to be completed with the textbook. The duration of the exam is approximately 20 minutes.
It is taken into account, in addition to knowledge of the subject, the clarity of presentation, the precision and the method of study.
REUMATOLOGY
Written test, consisting of 30 multiple choice questions each of them providing 4 possible answers (only one is right). The final score is calculated attributing 1 point for each right answer, 0 points in case of wrong or not provided answer. The final mark is the sum of the points achieved. The time allowed for this test is 1 hour. It is not allowed consulting any textbook or using any PC, smart phone, calculator. To pass the exam it is necessary to get at least 18 point out of 30. In the event of achieving 30 points it is also offered an additional question to improve the final mark with laude (in case of right answer). If the tests is not passed (final mark < 18), it is necessary to repeat the exam in a subsequent oral format.
The final grade is a weighted average of the marks obtained in each of the three tests. Reference texts
