Training objectives
- Overview of main fields of intervention of the oral and maxillofacial surgery. To allow a right understanding of speech and communication disorders by means of the analysis of the original pathologies (pathologies of the respiratory tract, pathologies of the vocal folds, etc).
Knowledge of the most relevant speech and language disorders in children and adults with hearing loss.
Knowledge of the most relevant disorders of the pneumo-phono-articolatory tract. Prerequisites
- knowledge of anatomy and pathology of the oral cavity. excellent knowledge of the anatomy and physiology of the pneumo-phono-articolatory and oro-pharyngo-laryngeal tract. Knowledge of anatomy and pathology of auditory system; knowledge of physiology of auditory and vestibular system.
Course programme
- AUDIOLOGY
The threshold of hearing: air conduction and bone conduction; hearing measurements in adults; hearing loss in children and screening programs; OAE,ABR,EChoG.
Behavioural observational audiometry/distraction testing.Classification of auditory disorders in children and diagnostic work-up; auditory rehabilitation: hearing aids, cochlear implant.
Otitis media with effusion in children; acute otitis media (AOM).
Classification of sensory.neural hearing loss in adults: diagnosis and treatment.
Vestibular disorders and diagnostic tools; balance disorders and diagnostic work-up.
PHONIATRICS
Troubles of the resonance, open and closed rhinolalia, nasalization. Phonosurgery indications.
Articulation troubles (organic dyslalias, audiogenic dyslalias, evolutionary, mechanical, peripheral, palatoschisis, dysarthria,).
Dysphonias classifications; congenital dysphonias (sulcus glottidis, vergeture, cysts, cri-du-chat syndrome, laringomalacia, laryngeal papillomatosis, congenital laryngeal webs); functional dysphonias, children’s dysphonias, troubles in adolescent voice change, troubles of the singing voice.
Organic dysphonias (acute and chronic laryngeal inflammations, nodules, polyps, granulomas and ulcers, Reinke oedemas, cysts, crico-arytenoideal arthritis, dislocation of the arytenoids, laryngeal neoplasms, dysphonias after laryngeal oncologic surgery). Post-traumatic and neurological dysphonias, laryngeal palsys, dysphonias after thyroid surgery. Stuttering.
OTOLARYNGOLOGY
Tonsillar pathology, dysphagia, H&N tumors, H&N pain
MAXILLOFACIAL
Fractures of the mandible and maxilla; cancer of the oral cavity and paranasal sinuses; malformation of the face; pre-prosthetic surgery; overview on the orthognatic surgery. Didactic methods

Learning assessment procedures
- AUDIOLOGY: the exam is written and includes two open-ended questions to which the candidate has to answer when they have one hour of time. The purpose of the valuation is considered the completeness and correctness of the response and the terminology used.
PHONIATRICS: the candidates are asked two questions relating to the Treaty in class. The time available for each candidate is approximately 15-20 minutes.
OTOLARINGOLOGY: the exam is scheduled written and consists of 15 multiple choice questions. For the test run it is granted one hour of time. The score assigned to each correct answer is 2 points; 0 points for each question not answered, and -0.5 for every wrong answer.
MAXILLOFACIAL: Oral exam with three questions for 10 minutes each (average interval 8-12 minutes), with the following criteria (qualitative) used in the evaluation: clarity and precision.
THE FINAL GRADE IS A WEIGHTED AVERAGE OF THE MARKS OBTAINED IN EACH TESTS. Reference texts
