Training objectives
- Knowledge of the main theories about the relationship between mind and body and their role in medical settings.
Application of the psychosomatic and biopsychosocial approach in psychiatric rehabilitation.
Knowledge of the main psychological and psychosocial factors in modulating vulnerability to disease and its course. Knowledge of the main diagnostic procedures and possible therapeutic interventions, in line with the psychosomatic approach and care integration. Prerequisites
- Knowledge of general and clinical psychology.
Course programme
- The main theories and activities that led to the definition and development of the Psychosomatic Medicine.
The main psychosocial factors and individual in modulating vulnerability to disease: role of early and late stressful events, social support, personological features in correlation with specific medical conditions, coping styles.
The somatoform disorders.
Some dimensions of psychological distress frequency revealed as most important in medical setting: Abnormal Illness Behaviour, Demoralization, Somatization.
The diagnostic approach in Psychosomatic Medicine. The Diagnostic Criteria of Psychosomatic Research (DCPR) and specific psychometric scales used in clinical setting.
The integrated approach of care from the perspective of Psychosomatic Medicine: complementary and alternative medicine, the main interventions in rehabilitation, psychotherapy and psychopharmacology. Didactic methods

Learning assessment procedures
- Oral exam lasting about 20 minutes, with 2 questions on the topics discussed during the lessons. The exam is considered passed when the student is able to answer to all the questions. In this case, starting from the minimum vote of 18, are assigned from 1 to 6 points for knowledge and understanding of the arguments, and from 1 to 6 points for the ability to recognize and describe the clinical implications of the issues (possible practical applications of theoretical knowledge in the context of Psychiatric Rehabilitation). The sum of the scores gives the final vote, up to a maximum of 30/30, “cum laude” when the student has obtained the highest scores.
