Training objectives

To examine the main clinical and therapeutic aspects to deal with the various problems of the relationship with people affected by cancer and their families.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledge of psychopathology

Course programme

Psycho-oncology: the origins and historical aspects.
Psychosocial implications of cancer: the patient. Psychosocial implications of cancer: the family.
Communication skills in oncology ( Oncotalk).
Distress and psychological disturbances in cancer care.
Grief and bereavement.
Burn-out.
Practical training: clinical case discussions and role-play.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination.
The oral examination will focus on the subjects listed above in "Course programme".
Criteria for the assessment of knowledge / skills acquisition:
- Student’s understanding of specific items requested;
- Ability to link and compare the different aspects and content covered;
- Reflective capacity demonstrated by the student with respect to the applicability of theoretical contents in the various areas of clinical intervention.
Each student will be asked 3 questions concerning the three macro-areas treated:
- Psychosocial implications of cancer;
- Communication and helping relationship in health care;
- distress and psychiatric disorders in cancer care.
A score from 0 to 11 (according to the criteria for the assessment the acquisition of the abovementioned knowledge / skills) to each question will be awarded.
The final grade will result from the sum of the three scores attributed to each applicant.
To pass the test students must acquire at least 6 out of 11 points for each question, a minimum score of 18 and a maximum of 33.
For the scorer of 31, 32, 33 students will be awarded with “30 e lode”.
If the total score is less than 18, students must repeat the oral examination.
The examination will last for 20 minutes.
