Training objectives
- EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY
Starting from the knowledge of the physiology of pregnancy, the dynamics of delivery, the biomechanical changes in pregnant women, students will be able to structure specific tests and to address the woman to the choice of appropriate exercises. Students will be able to formulate a program of physical activity based on the characteristics of women and to verify its effectiveness
EXERCISE IN RESPIRATORY DISEASES.
Starting from the knowledge of respiratory physiology, students will be able to understand the many physiological problems of chronic pulmonary diseases, (in particular, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and their effect on exercise and dyspnea. With these knowledges, students will be able to plan and manage a program of exercise training for rehabilitation of patients suffering from chronic respiratory diseases.
One lesson is devoted to exercise induced bronchospasm: epidemiology, pathogenesis, diagnosis and management. Prerequisites
- Basic of biochemistry and physics.
Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive system and of respiratory and circulatory apparatus. Course programme
- EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY
Physiological changes of pregnancy. Dynamics of birth. Postural changes during pregnancy. Anatomy of the female pelvis. Biomechanics of articular structures involved. Tests for the selection of exercises.Timing and methods of intervention.
EXERCISE IN RESPIRATORY DISEASES
Principles of respiratory function evaluation, especially the distinction between obstructive and restrictive respiratory defect. Bronchial asthma and exercise induced bronchospasm. Physical activity for asthmatic subjects. Non pharmacologic prevention of exercise induced bronchospasm. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Flow limitation. Sigarette smoking: respiratory injuries. Assessment of nicotin addiction. Antismoking programmes. Exercise physiology in subjects with pulmonary hyperinflation and flow limitation. Didactic methods
- Lectures
Practical lessons with simulations of setting and management of an exercise training program for subjects suffering from chronic respiratory diseases. Learning assessment procedures
- EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY
Written exam with one or more open-ended questions for a space of about 10-12 lines.
EXERCISE IN RESPIRATORY DISEASES
Attendance is compulsory: at least 58% of lessons. Attendance is detected by signature or roll.
Only the students who attended the requested number of lessons can take the examination.
Oral exam, split in two parts:
First part: valuation of the knowledge of respiratory pathophysiology in regards to chronic obstructive respiratory diseases and the effects on exercise performance.
Second part: test of the ability to set-up and manage a programm of exercise training for respiratory patients.
The final grade is a arithmetic average of the marks obtained in each tests. Reference texts
- EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY
Educational material: feature articles of the topics and a selection of the material presented in class.
EXERCISE IN RESPIRATORY DISEASES
Photocopies of articles and all copies of the slides, graphs and diagrams explained in class are provided.
