Training objectives

EXERCISE IN PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE
Knowledge of risk factors for vascular disease. Knowledge of anatomy with special reference to the arterial circulation of the lower limbs circulation and related diseases. Knowledge of the biochemical and structural changes induced by exercise. Knowledge of the concepts behind functional assessment and learning the different methods in use. Knowledge of the effect of surgery on exercise in peripheral vascular disease and prescribing exercise.
EXERCISE IN HEART DISEASE
Knowledge of the role of exercise in the prevention of heart disease: effect of exercise on cardiovascular risk factors. Pathological and clinical basis of ischemic heart disease; role of exercise in patients after myocardial infarction.Basis of sudden cardiac death: role of preventive screening. The exercise in patients with arrhythmias and/or after device implantation.
Pathological and clinical basis of heart failure; role of exercise in patients with chronic heart failure.

Prerequisites

To know basics of human functional anatomy, physics, applied exercise biochemistry and physiology. Knowledge of the energy sources for muscular exercise and of the fundamental elements of exercise physiology. Passing the exam Discipline biomediche del movimento is required.

Course programme

EXERCISE IN PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE
Peripheral vascular disease: factors underlying mechanisms of atherosclerosis and abnormal vessel structure, the effects of exercise on angiogenesis and arteriogenesis, functional assessment of the patient, principles and effects of exercise-based programs in peripheral vascular disease
EXERCISE IN HEART DISEASE
Exercise and prevention of heart disease : epidemiological and clinical aspects. Effects of exercise on cardiovascular risk factors (hypertension, dyslipidemia, diabetes and metabolic syndrome).
Clinical aspects of ischemic heart disease: role of exercise in patients after myocardial infarction.
Risk of cardiac sudden death: bradyarrhythmias, tachyarrhythmias and implantable devices (pacemaker and defibrillator). The role of preventive screening.
Exercise in patients with arrhythmias or with implantable devices.
Pathological and clinical aspects of chronic heart failure and cardiovascular rehabilitation.

Learning assessment procedures

EXERCISE IN PERIPHERAL VASCULAR DISEASE
Written test. The aim of the examination is to evaluate the study of matter and the understanding of the subjects and to verify the level of achievement of learning objectives previously indicated. The examination is based on:
• A single written test that includes 40 multiple choice questions on all the topics covered in the course including seminars. Each question includes four possible answers of which only correct. The score is as follows: 1 point for a correct answer; 0 points for a wrong answer or no answer.
• The vote on the test is calculated by algorithm
The time for this test is 1 hour. It is not allowed to consult texts or use PCs, smart phones, calculators, .... ;
Further details are provided in the first and the last lesson of the course.
EXERCISE IN HEART DISEASE
A written test will includes: 2 open questions; 1 related to the practical activity done during the course and 1 related to the topics discussed during frontal lessons.
20 multiple choice questions related to the topics discussed during frontal lessons. Each multiple choice question will include 4 possible answers of which only one is correct: it will be assigned 1 point if the answer is correct; 0 points for a wrong answer or no answer. The time allowed for the test is 1 hours. It is not allowed to consult texts or use PCs, smartphones, calculators, or other electronic devices.
THE VOTE ON THE ENTIRE COURSE IS CALCULATED ON THE WEIGHT OF THE INDIVIDUAL MODULES CREDITS.
