Training objectives

The course Conservation and Management of Protected Areas aims at providing and improving the basic knowledge on the main principles and study methods of biodiversity conservation. To outline man's role (past and present) on the natural environment. Parks. MPAs. Management of protected areas.
KNOWLEDGE AND UNDERSTANDING
The student:
- knows the proper ecological terminology;
- knows the ecological basis of natural systems;

Prerequisites

No formal propedeuticity is required, however the student must have basic knowledge of ecology, with properties of language and scientific mastery.

Course programme

IN THE FIRST PART (15 hours), after an general introduction to the course, the student will be guided through the levels of organization of biodiversity: genetic, specific, phyletic and functional diversity.
IN THE SECOND PART (15 hours): Species as a measure of biodiversity. Distribution of species richness. Hot spots of biodiversity. Diversity and surface area.
IN THE THIRD PART (10 hours): When a species is going to die: interventions on natural populations. Blue lists. Protected areas.
