Training objectives
- A good knowledge and understanding of chemical bonding models, the chemistry of s and p elements. The main knowledges concern the bonding models in Inorganic and Organic Chemistry: covalent bond (Valence Bond and Molecular Orbital Theory);Ionic Bond (elettrostatic model)and Metallic bond (Band Theory). On the basis of these fundamentals, the students must be able to recognize the nature of the bond, the strucure and the geometry(angles and bond lenghts), and the electronic and physical properties of the compounds.
Prerequisites
- The background knowledges provided by the courses of General and Inorganic Chemistry and Laboratory are mandatory. The propedeutic rule is written in the "percorso di formazione".
Course programme
- The course forecasts 48 hours of frontal lectures concerning the following topics. Atomic structure. The hydrogen atom. Schroedinger Equation.Quantum numbers. One-electron wavefunctions of multi-electron atoms, effective nuclear charge, orbital energies. Electron configurations. Periodicity.(10 h)
Molecules.Electron pair bonds. Valence bond theory, hybridization, resonance. Molecular orbitals,Energy Diagrams of molecular orbitals for diatomic omonuclear and eteronuclear and polyatomic molecules. Localized and delocalized bonds.(10 h)
Solids.Crystal structures. Ionic solids. Born-Haber cycle.(4 h) Covalent solids (3h). Metals.(3h)
Other chemical forces Ion-dipole and dipole-dipole interactions. Van der Waals forces.(3)
Hydrogen: The element. Hydrogen bonding. The alkali metals: The elements, Trends in properties of ionic compounds. The alkaline earth metals: The elements, Berillium,Trends in properties of ionic compounds. The Boron group:Boron, Aluminum and heavier elements. The Carbon group: Carbon, Silicon and heavier elements. The Nitrogen group:Nitrogen, Phosphorous and heavier elements. The Oxygen group:Oxygen, Sulfur and heavier elements. The halogens:the elements, Oxo-compounds, Interhalogen compounds. The noble gases: fluoro and oxo compounds.(18 h) Didactic methods
- The course is constituted of 48 h of frontal lessons, with the help of slides wich help explaing the different subject
Learning assessment procedures
- The aim of the exam is to verify the knowledges and the abilities of the basic formation and at which level the learning objectives previously described have been acquired. The exam is oral and involves at least 3 questions.
Before the oral exam, there is a written test in order to verify whether the student has acquired sufficient knowledge to take the oral exam.
In the unfortunate event of perduring pandemic conditions, the final exam will be only oral, via remote connections.
There are two exam sessions (december-february and june-september). Each session includes 5 exam dates. Additional sessions can be programmed if need arises Reference texts
- Teacher's handhouts and the following textbooks: 1.Huheey, E. A. Keiter, R. L. Keiter, Chimica Inorganica, Seconda Edizione, Piccin, Padova 1999.
