Training objectives
- The course aims to provide the student with the cognitive tools necessary to know how to prepare, characterize and use polymeric materials with simple composition.
The course will provides the student with the basic knowledge on the chemical structure, synthetic methods and on the peculiar behaviour of polymers in solution and in the solid state. Prerequisites
- Knowledge of basic organic chemistry and kinetics are required.
Course programme
- The following topics will be covered in 36 hours:
Definition of polymer chain. Types of polymeric structures and their nomenclatures. Stereochemistry of chains and defects. Average molecular weight and its distribution.
Chain polymerization methods: classic radical polymerization, anionic polymerization, cationic polymerization, living radical polymerization, catalytic polymerization.
Stages polymerization methods: polyaddition, polycondensation.
The characteristic temperatures of the polymers and their correlation with the macromolecular structure.
Thermoplastic and thermosetting polymers: transformation methods and applications.. Didactic methods
- The course will be deliverd by preregistered lessons (e-learning).
The slides of the lessons will be available for students in advance. In addtion texbooks for further study will be recommended. Learning assessment procedures
- The exam consists of an oral test in which the acquired knowledge of polymer chemistry will be verified through 3 questions. In addition, a further question will be proposed to verify the student's ability to compare and correlate knowledge acquired in separate modules of the teaching unit.
