Training objectives
- The aim of the course is the description of the electric and magnetic properties of the molecules and their influence on the macroscopic behavior of matter.
At the end of this course, the student is able to understand how the molecular parameters control the electric and magnetic behavior of matter and to apply these concepts to predict these macroscopic properties when they are not known. Prerequisites
- The knowledge of the molecular quantum mechanics is required.
Course programme
- During the course the electric properties of the molecules and their macroscopic manifestation are described: static and dynamic electric polarizability, permittivity, electric susceptibility, refractive index, and optical activity.
Moreover, during the course also the magnetic properties of matter are described: magnetic susceptibility, paramagnetism, magnetic perturbations, shield constants, and spin-spin, hyperfine, and nuclear spin-spin couplings. Didactic methods
- The course is base on 36 hours of lectures supported by exercises on blackboard.
Learning assessment procedures
- The learning check is based on an oral exam in which the subjects of the course are discussed and commented.
