Training objectives
- The aim of the course is the chemical, physical and also partly mechanical knowledge of the corrosive processes that bring about a loss of performance of metallic materials, chiefly of the structural class. The basic concepts regard the formation mechanism of electrolitic cells, the factors affecting their growth and metallurgical parameters that are influencing.
A cornerstone of this discipline is an understanding
of how to minimize or prevent the corrosion by an action
on metal or environment; this study is accomplished
with the exposition of many examples of the degradation attack on ferrous materials ( as steels ) and non-ferrous materials daily used ( as copper- and aluminum-alloys ) but also on these new processed ( as titanium, magnesium, nickel alloys ). Prerequisites
- Let's suppose that the student have the knowledge
of the termodynamics and kinetics science and the
handling of the algebric calculus tools ( derivatives and integrals ), who put their laws into practice. Moreover
are requested the attention by graphics on multivariable
systems ( as phase diagrams and representative chart
of the metals properties) and also is suggested a
preliminary approach to the 3D -observation ( as on the
diffusion and reactions in solids ). Course programme
- Corrosion process. Formation of electrochemical cells.
Thermodynamical (Pourbaix) and kinetical aspects.
Mixed-potential theory and Evans diagrams.Corrosion rate and her affecting factors. Uniform corrosion and forms of localized corrosion. Environment-assisted
failure: stress corrosion cracking, corrosion fatigue,
hydrogen embrittlement. Mechanisms, assessment
of susceptibility ; inspection tests, diagnostics,
monitoring. Prevention methods:actions on the
environment and on the metal. Behaviour of the class of steels , copper alloys, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys
and nickel alloys. Didactic methods
- Grounds of the discipline, deepening and widening
of the basic knowledge, applied instructions for a
next practice by an at-front lecture, numerical exercitations ,discussions and observations , experiential and active learning , case examples and studies.
. Learning assessment procedures
- At end of the course sections are oral and written test, just to verify students level. The final exam is oral
