Training objectives
- Knowledge of the magmatic processes in the different geodynamic settings of the Mediterranean area. In particular, the course is focused on the relationships between magma types, their mantle sources in within-plate and convergent and divergent plate margins.
Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge in geology, petrology and geochemistry.
Course programme
- Tectono-magmatic features and stress field at the divergent, convergent, and transcurrent plate boundaries in the Mediterranean area (8 hours). Magmatism and geodynamic evolution of oceanic basins: petrogenesis of MORB magmas (12 hours). Magmatism and geodynamic evolution of converging plate margins and subduction zones: petrogenesis of tholeiitic, calcalkaline and shoshonitic series in the Mediterranean area. Tectono-magmatic evolution of island arc-back arc systems in the Mediterranean area (14 hours). Petrogenesis and tectono-magmatic characteristics of the intra-plate volcano-plutonic associations in the Mediterranean area (14 hours).
Didactic methods
- Frontal lessons in which are used petrological and geochemical diagrams as well as geo-tectonic maps.
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral examination consists of at least three questions on the discussed topics using diagrams, maps and geodynamic schemes, for a duration of about 30 minutes.
Reference texts
