Training objectives

Knowledge of the magmatic processes in the different geodynamic settings in the framework of global tectonics.
In particular, the course is focused on the relationships between magma types, their mantle sources in within-plate and convergent and divergent plate margins.

Prerequisites

Basic knowledges in geology, petrology and geochemistry

Course programme

Tectono-magmatic features and stress field at the divergent, convergent, and transcurrent plate boundaries and intraplate (8 hours). Magmatism and geodynamic evolution of mid-ocean ridges: ridge-push forces, petrogenesis of MORB magmas and ocean floor spreading rates (12 hours). Magmatism and geodynamic evolution of converging plate margins and subduction zones: slab-pull forces, petrogenesis of tholeiitic, calcalkaline and shoshonitic series.Tectono-magmatic evolution of active continental margins.Tectono-magmatic evolution of island arc-back arc systems (anchored slab model, evolutionary model; 14 hours). Petrogenesis and tectono-magmatic characteristics of the intra-plate volcano-plutonic associations (hot spots, low and high volcanicity rifts; 14 hours).

Didactic methods

Frontal lessons in which are used petrological and geochemical diagrams as well as geo-tectonic maps.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral examination consists of at least three questions on the discussed topics using diagrams, maps and geodynamic schemes, for a duration of about 30 minutes.
