Training objectives
- Knowledge: an introduction to nuclear and quark physics. Abilities: to learn a few basic techniques useful in studying atomic nuclei and hadrons.
Prerequisites
- Very good knowledge of non-relativistic quantum mechanics. Dirac equation. Basic knowledge of field theory.
Course programme
- 1) Strong interaction, nuclear matter, independent particle approximation, Bethe-Goldstone equation (14 hours)
2) Walecka model for nuclear physics, chiral symmetry, sigma model (14 hours)
3) quark dynamics: non-relativistic model, MIT bag model, solitons (14 hours). Didactic methods
- This is a theoretical course. A few techniques for numerical analysis are used.
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral exam. The student has to be able to discuss the models for nuclear and for hadronic physics introduced during the course. The preparation of the student will be tested from his/her ability to discuss the problems of nuclear physics introduced in the course.
