Training objectives
- Advanced course in Elementary Particle Physics, in particular for those topics currently at the frontier of experimental and theoretical reasarch.
To make accessible the Standard Model to the students. A practical introduction to the calculation of many quantities of physical interest in particle physics.
The student should acquire the capability to follow
seminars, conference reports and articles concerning QCD . Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of Elementary Particle Physics.
A basic quantum mechanics knowledge ( Sakurai, Dirac level), and a familiarity with elementary particle physics ( Perkins level) Course programme
- - Relativistic Notation,Lagrangians,Currents and Interactions. [2 hours]
- The K.G and Dirac equation. [4 hours]
- Standard Model Lagrangian. [4 hours]
- Electroweak theory and Quantum Chromodynamics. [4 hours]
- Gauge invariance as a dynamical principle. Hidden gauge invariance. The Higgs mechanism. [4 hours]
- Hadron physics: spectroscopy and charmonium. [8 hours]
- Form factors. [4 hours]
- Structure functions. [4 hours]
- Collins fragmentation functions. [2 hours]
- Measurement of the muon anomalous magnetic moment. [2 hours]
- Grand unified theories. [2 hours]
- Running coupling constants. [2 hours]
- Paper reading and discussion. [6 hours] Didactic methods
- Lectures.
Learning assessment procedures
- The final examination is oral which covers the entire content of the course.
