Training objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide the basic knowledge of rational mechanics and of its tools.
The knowlewdge provided by this course regards the ability to construct mathematical models for mechanical systems of few freedom degrees and to determine their motion by means of mathematical tools.
Moreover the course aims to develop student's ability to address and solve mechanical problems.
At the end the student will know the fundamental topics of rational mechanics and will expose with mathematical language the arguments. Prerequisites
- Good knowledge of linear algebra and geometry, of differential and integral calculus of real functions of several variables and of ordinary differential equations.
Course programme
- 72 hours are scheduled: Recalls of vector calculus (10 hours) - Kinematics of a particle, of a rigid body and of an holonomic system (22 hours) - Kinetics of material systems (14 hours) - Dynamics of a free and constrained particle, dynamics of a rigid body (10 hours) - Basics concepts of Analytical Mechanics and theorem of virtual power (6 hours) - Lagrange Equations, Hamilton function and cyclic coordinates, stability of equilibrium and small oscillations (6 hours) - Qualitative analysis of the motion (Weierstrass Theory) (2 hours) - Motion of a rigid body about a fixed axis, Euler's equations of motion (2 hours).
Didactic methods
- Lectures on all the topics are presented. Several examples and many exercises are proposed and solved.
Learning assessment procedures
- The student has to solve some exercises assigned during the course. A written test of three hours (where the use of didactical materials is allowed) is proposed and it is followed by an oral exam. The written test aims at ascertaining the abilities acquired in solving problems whitin the different topics. Students are admitted to the oral exam upon passing the written test (vote not less than 16/30). The exam is successfully passed if the final vote is greater than or equal to 18/30.
