Training objectives
- The aim of the course is to provide the basic knowledge on the most ancient human history in relation to past climatic and environmental changes. The course will focus on the main steps of cultural evolution: from the African origin, to the arrival of the first human groups in the Italian peninsula (around 1 million years ago) up to the development of a complex social organization (around 5000 years ago). The acquisition of this knowledge will be completed by the ability to coordinate and manage cultural events that include itineraries of prehistoric and protohistoric archeology.
Prerequisites
- The course will require the knowledge and abilities relating to humanities and sciences acquired at secondary school.
Course programme
- 1.The Quaternary: chronologic and palaeoclimatic background (2h)
2. The African origin of humans and the diffusion of Homo in the ancient world (2h)
3.The epoch of prehistoric hunter-gatherers: the Palaeolithic and the Mesolithic in the Italian peninsula. Cultural background and some case-studies (8 h): Isernia la Pineta, Grotta di Fumane (VR), Riparo Tagliente (VR), Mondeval de Sora (BL)
4.The epoch of the first farmers, herders and metallurgists: the Neolithic, the Copper and the Bronze ages in the Italian peninsula. Cultural background and some case-studies (8 h): Lugo di Grezzana (VR), Oetzi-uomo del Similaun (BZ), Saint Martin de Corléans (AO), the terramare of the Po Plain area (MO)
5.Laboratory of prehistoric experimental archaeology (4h)
6.Prehistoric itinerary (3h)
7.Protohistoric itinerary (3h) Didactic methods
- Lectures illustrated by Power Point presentations (20h); laboratory of experimental prehistoric archeology and analysis of the copies of prehistoric artefacts (4 h); fieldtrips to a prehistoric museums and a prehistoric park (6h).
Learning assessment procedures
- As a final proof the preparation of a written report of a total of 10 pages (Times New Roman 12, interline 1.5) illustrated by pictures and bibliographic reference will be required. The report should contain the development of a project on a prehistoric/protohistoric itinerary in the Italian peninsula. The student will give a short talk of 10 minutes illustrated by a ppt or .pdf presentation of max. 10 slides. The final note will consist of max. 15 point on the written report (clearness and organisation of the reported data) and max. 15 points on the oral presentation (clearness and correctness of the discussed topic and ability to answer to either 1or 2 questions asked by the teacher concerning the topic of the report and the general contents of the course). The file of the written report and the presentation should be named as follows: (student) name surname-short title (es. Rossi Mario-Arene Candide e Museo Finale).
