Training objectives

1) A basic knowledge of Medieval Archaeology in Italy.
2) Theoretical and methodological tools. Interpreting the medieval archaeological sources in context: key principles.
3) Ability to undertake research and studies in medieval archeology. Reading stratigraphy of contexts and structures; Urban Archaeology; Landscape Archaeology; Archaeology of the Artifacts; Buildings Archaeology.

Course programme

INTRODUCTION AND METHODOLOGY
- History of Medieval Archaeology in Italy.
- Medieval Archaeology in Italy today.
- Urban and landscape archaeology: methodological and strategical elements.

MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY PRINCIPAL THEMES
- After Rome: early medieval towns from late antiquity to early Middle Ages.
- The medieval city at the time of ‘Comuni’.
- Medieval settlements and landscapes. Castles and the incastellamento. The second incastellamento.
- Buildings Archaeology.
- Medieval funerary archaeology.
- Monasteries and churches. Major monastic settlements in Italy.
- Archaeology of production: pottery, glass, metals, wood.

Oral examination.
Questions to evaluate the Candidate's preparation based on the proposed program.
