Training objectives
- The student must know and understand the rules that govern ecosystems, in order to understand the potential impacts on natural ecosystems and human artificial ones (urban ecosystems) and in the management of natural resources
Must acquire theoretical and practical knowledge necessary to make correct management interventions in urban ecosystems if there are problems related to pollution, the presence of organisms harmful animals for food and plantae urbicae, biodeteriogens of cultural heritage and diseases that can affect man and pets.
Must be capable to achieve adequate and sustainable management interventions in cities Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of ecology, zoology, botany and chemistry
Course programme
- Flow of matter and energy - energy requirements in the city and the environmental impact.
Climate - The urban climate: temperature, humidity and wind.
Water - The city and the water. Management of drinking water and reuse of treated water.
Pollution - Different forms of pollution in urban areas.
Problems of USW (Urban solid waste).
Plants - Urbanization and vegetation. Urban plants and environmental quality. Role of urban green.
Animal - Biodiversity of the urban ecosystem. The man-made environment and control of animals: mice and rats in the city, feral colonies, urban ornithology, insects and other arthropods in the city.
Demography and society - Sustainable management of urban ecosystems. Health and quality of life in the city.
Health issues and perspectives - Historical relations from city and health. Health in home and outside. Mosquitoes and other pests in the city: a severe risk to public health.
Protection and management of cultural heritage - Biodeterioration and air pollution on artifacts, works of art and demoethnoanthropological objects. Didactic methods
- Will be carried out lectures with Power Point presentations.
Are also provided two laboratories with the aim of providing the necessary preparation of the recognition of particular pests, pathogens and biodeteriogens. Learning assessment procedures
