Training objectives
- Knowledge of the peculiar characteristics of Roma legal language as compared to that of other ancient artes.
Main knowledge: The legal language as one of the technical languages of the Latin; the common origin of legal language, priestly formulas and military language; conservatism and archaism of legal language; legal formulae; the prescriptive language; the singularis technicus; the genitive forensis; the elliptical proceedings; anaphora, antithesis and chiasmus; alliteration; growing cola; rhetorical amplificatio; asindeton; Figura etymologica.
Main skills: Capacity for critical analysis of the legal and historical sources; systematic understanding and mastering of the legal language and that of the jurisprudence of ancient Rome, the ability to reconstruct the framework of relations between the technical languages of law, war and religion. Prerequisites
- Basic knowledge of Latin literature and Latin language
Course programme
- Analysis of Roman legal language from archaic age to the Principate
Didactic methods
- Lectures, seminars. Origins and peculiar characteristics of some aspects of legal Latin are analytically illustrated. The comparison with ancient, historical and juridical sources is constant. Whenever possible, the lessons are introduced by the examination of documents - distributed to students in photocopies or published online, if necessary - concerning the topic addressed. Students are also provided with a written description of the main contents of the course - illustrated from time to time during the lessons - in the form of an overall summary of the topics covered.
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral test, consisting of a number of open-ended questions appropriate to value the candidate's knowledge, based on the examination program
