Training objectives

The course aims to provide the basic knowledge for the scientific analysis of Latin writing in the various periods (from the 9th to the 16th century) and to offer students some examples of the application of the palaeographic method to manuscript evidence.

Prerequisites

A basic knowledge of both European history and culture from the Carolingian period to the Renaissance and the Latin language is recommended.
For foreign students: good reading and speaking skills.

Course programme

The course introduces the student to the scientific analysis of Latin writing in the period considered (IX-XVI century).
The following main topics will be covered:
Principles and methods of palaeographic analysis: form, form, ductus, angle of writing, hatching. Ligatures and connections. Writing techniques: cutlery and cursive writing. Description and historical development of the Latin abbreviation system (abbreviations, truncations, Tironian notes, etc.).
The course will provide a brief overview of Latin writings from the Carolingian period to the press age, with the analysis and commentary of reproductions of manuscripts.

Didactic methods

Oral lessons, with projections of images through Power-Point and with commentary and analysis of reproductions of Latin manuscripts.
Lectures will be recorded and archived on the FAD-Se @ platform.

Learning assessment procedures

Oral exam with possible reading test of the tables distributed in class and / or uploaded on the teacher's website.
