Training objectives
- The course is an introduction to the history of German Literature and it aims at providing students with a basic knowledge to approach:

2) the study of specific German genres with a selection of literary texts from the IX century to the XV century;
3) the study of some texts of the XV and XVI centuries.
By the end of the course students will be able to locate a text in its historical-cultural context, recognize the characteristics of German literary genres from the IX century to the XVI century, analyse autonomously German texts of the XV and XVI centuries.
The acquisition of this knowledge, together with the contents described below, represents the main learning aims and objectives of the course. Prerequisites
- None
Course programme
- The course is structured as follows:
a) Introduction to the history of German literature from the beginnings to the Reformation with a description of the main literary genres and a selection of texts from the IX century to the XV century (Hildebrandslied, IX c.; Rolandslied - Konrad von Regensburg, XII c.; Tristan - Gottfried von Strassburg, XIII c.; Nibelungenlied, XIII c.; Walther von der Vogelweide, XIII c.; Das fliessende Licht der Gottheit - Mechtild von Magdeburg, XIII c.; Aesop - Heinrich von Steinhöwel, XV c.)
b) a focus on pre-humanism and on the Reformation with the reading and analysis of Johannes von Tepl's Der Ackermann aus Böhmen (1401) and Martin Luther's Der Sendbrief vom Dolmetschen (1530). Didactic methods
- Lectures with active participation and regular attendance of students.
Learning assessment procedures
- Oral exam.
During the oral exam the methodological skills acquired by students will be evaluated.
Students will be invited to answer questions concerning the history of German literature from the beginnings to the XVI century; the different kinds of literary genres and their historical-cultural background; the text explained during the lectures.
The achievement of an organic vision of information acquired during classes and a critical use of the bibliographical material will be assessed with very positive marks. An almost mnemonic knowledge and a basic critical use of the sources will lead to a passing grade. Training gaps and a total lack of a critical use of the material will lead to a failure.
