Training objectives
- Students will acquire a linguistic, communicative and cultural competence of oral and written English (level C1/C2 QCER). At the end of the course students will be able to distinguish phonetical, morphosyntactic, lexical and pragmatic elements of various English varieties. They will be able to interpret different textual typologies written in these varieties.
Prerequisites
- Students must have successfully completed English language II
Course programme
- The course introduces the main phonological, morphological, syntactic and semantic aspects of the English language and its varieties. It gives students the descriptive and metalinguistic tools pivotal to the development of an awareness of the richness of the English language worldwide through the analysis of authentic materials. A more practical part consists in the linguistic and cultural analysis of different contemporary text types. The interactive nature of the course calls for an active participation in the classroom during lessons, which will be enriched by practice exercises and by the retrieval of online texts also available in google classroom.
Practical lessons by language instructors will tackle ortographic, phonetical, syntactical and lexical aspects of the English language and its varieties. Didactic methods
- The course is divided into practical lesson by language instructors and theoretical lesson held by Professor Eleonora Federici. Students will be divided in smaller groups for language sessions which aim at providing students with linguistic and communicative competence at least at C1 level, possibly C2. The theoretical module is thought to enable students to learn to analyse different textual typologies with attention to morphology, phonology, semantics, lexis, syntax of the English language and its varieties.
Learning assessment procedures
- Annual course taught in English (Oct-May). The course is divided in theoretical lessons held by Professor Eleonora Federici and language sessions with language instructors. The final exam is both written and oral. The written part is made of grammar exercises, reading comprehension, a writing skills. The oral exam is based on the materials given in class. Partial exams at the end of each semester will be offered to students who attend classes. Students who attend classes will be asked to present a research paper on a specific variety.
