Training objectives
- To acquire the basic theoretical knowledge on Analytical Chemistry, with special attention to chemical equilibria and volumetric methods of analysis. To learn the working principles of the most important analytical instruments of a chemistry lab and their applications.
To be able to manage, regarding the essential features, the basic equipment of a laboratory for analytical chemistry, such as glassware, burettes, automatic pipettes, balance, pH meter and spectrophotometer. Prerequisites
- No specific prerequisites are required. However, OFA in Chemistry have to be overcome and a basic knowledge of General and Inorganic Chemistry, Physics, Mathematics can be very profitable.
Course programme
- The analytical method; sampling and sample preparation; statistical analysis of results.
The equilibrium constant: definitions and calculations on solubility.
Acid-base equilibria: pH calculation on solutions of both weak, monoprotic acids/bases and buffers.
Volumetric methods: definitions, techniques and calculations.
Acid-base titrations: description and pH calculation in each point of the titration.
Argentometric, complexometric and red-ox titrations.
Galvanic cells, reduction standard potentials and the Nernst equation; measure and reference electrodes; the glass electrode.
Molecular absorption spectrophotometry: theory and instrumentation, the Lambert-Beer law.
Chromatography: theory, instrumentation and operating modes.
Virtual multimedia laboratory.
Numerical exercises in preparation for the exam. Didactic methods
- Theoretical lessons (6 ECTS = 48 hours) with the help of the blackboard, videos and slide show on all the topics of the program.
Learning assessment procedures
- The achievement of the 6 credits of the Analytical Chemistry course requires the passing of a multiple choice written test on all the contents of the course, including some numerical exercises, or, exceptionally, an oral test.
Reference texts
- The textbook is the following: D.C. Harris, "Chimica analitica quantitativa", Zanichelli, 3a ed. italiana, 2017.
For consultation, the following texts are also recommended: D.A. Skoog, D.M. West, F.J. Holler, S.R. Crouch "Fondamenti di Chimica Analitica", II edizione, EdiSES, 2005; R. Cozzi, P. Protti, T. Ruaro, Analisi Chimica Strumentale, Zanichelli, 1997.
The teacher will also provide students with the slides shown in class, in the form of handouts.
