Training objectives

The student will be able to apply the scientific principles relative to the design, production and quality control of liquid, semi-solid and solid pharmaceutical formulations. In addition the student will be able to evaluate the drawbacks associated to production and use of the studied pharmaceutical forms.

Prerequisites

The student must have organic chemistry, physics and mathematical knowledge

- Definition of drug and pharmaceutical form (2 h)
- Powders: physico-chemical characteristics (4 h)
- Granulates: preparation methods, excipients, uses (4 h)
- Tablets: preparation methods, excipients, (4 h)
- Capsule: preparation methods, excipients, (4 h)
- coating of tablets and capsules (2 h)
- Solutions and their properties, the dissolution process (2 h)
- Freeze drying process (2 h)
- Surface and interface phenomena (2 h)
- Classification and properties of surfactants (4 h)
- Disperse systems and colloidal dispersions (2 h)
- Suspensions: characteristics, preparation (4 h)
- Emulsions: characteristics, preparation (4 h)
- Sterilization process (2 h)
- Parenteral preparations (2 h)
- Modified release pharmaceutical forms (4 h)

Didactic methods

The course will be delivered through theoretical lessons aimed at exposing and explaining the contents of the program with the help of videos showing some production processes

Learning assessment procedures

The actual acquisition of knowledge and skills provided by the course will be ascertained by a written evaluation. The objective of the examination is to verify the level of achievement of the previously indicated educational objectives. By the test the ability to connect and compare different aspects treated during the course will be evaluated.
The test consists of 16 multiple choice questions (a-d). A score of 2 points each is awarded. No penalties are given to unanswered questions or wrong answers.
