Training objectives
- The course aims to provide knowledge of Quality Systems and Environmental Quality Management currently available and recognized at European and international level. The student is accompanied: to develop a general knowledge on the evolution of EU environmental law in the period since the fifties up today with particular reference to programs and tools that led to the spread of environmental certification; to understand the reasons that why a private company should adopt Environmental Quality Management (costs and benefits, opportunities and limitations). Main goals and implementation of LCA (Life Cycle Analisys).
Prerequisites
- Propaedeutic studies are not foreseen. The student must have basic knowledge of biology.

BACKGROUND ON ENVIRONMENTAL POLICIES: the development of environmental policies in the European Union; Sustainable Development and the main reference documents; global ecological problems and widespread impacts; from policies of "Command and Control" to fiscal policies and voluntary agreements. .
ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY: evolution of the quality concept; Total Quality Management; Tools for Total Quality Management (TQM); elements and benefits of quality systems.
STANDARDS: The significance of standardization; the socio-economic role of standardization; Standardization of tools; Standardization bodies; standardization in the European Community.
CERTIFICATION: definition; certification types; Certification bodies; testing laboratories.
STANDARDS ISO 9000: Quality System certification according to ISO 9000; dissemination and benefits of ISO 9000 certification.
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS (EMS): Environmental Assessment; identification of environmental aspects and critical priorities; setting goals and programs; different procedures; Internal auditing activities; targets revision; Environmental Statement.
LAW OF ISO 14000 and COMMUNITY ECO-MANAGEMENT AND ENVIRONMENTAL AUDIT EMAS: the international standard ISO14001-4 and the European EMAS regulation; costs and timing of the certification; benefits of certification; certification bodies; accreditation of verifiers; differences and integrations among various types of certification.
OTHER SYSTEMS: the Environmental Product Declarations (EPD): eco-labeling (ECO-LABEL) of European Union; LCA - Life Cycle Analysis; the Integrated Product Policy (IPP). Didactic methods
- The course is 48 hours divided into:
- General framework on environmental politcs (2 h)
- Environmental quality(2 h)
- Regulations and certifications (2 h)
- The certification (2 h)
- Environmental system management(S.G.A.) (11 h)
- ISO 14000's regulations series(2 h)
- The Communitary's system of environmental management and environmental audit EMAS (11 h)
- Relation and integration between different kind of certification (10 h)
- The ecological labels and environmental product declarations (EPD) (2 h)
- The ecological label(ECO-LABEL) of European Union (2 h)
- LCA - Life Cycle Analysis (2 h); ; lectures, classroom exercises and discussion of case studies. Learning assessment procedures
- Written examination composed of 10 questions of which 5 at multiple choice and 5 with open question. Each multiple choice correct answer scores 1 point. Each correct open answer scores 5 points. Total scores is 30 points. The examination is successfully with a minimum score of 18/30.
